Chapter 16

Roxie's Vocals

June 18, 2015

This evening, as Jay and I returned home, we could hear Roxie calling and calling. She was using the "whanh" call that we believe is associated with food. The persistence of the calls caused me to become concerned, and I turned on the video recorder -- mostly to capture the sound. I did succeed in that, although you can see how I struggled with the heavy unmounted camera.

Roxie was so persistent that she sounded argumentative!

Moments later, we realized that Roxie was in fact holding prey; she began eating, talking all the while. Later, as I watch this video closely, I can see that she was not just talking to herself! I'm reasonably certain that she is calling in response to someone else making the "whanh" call!

What do you think?? I have read that only the female makes this call. Does Rufous also use the "whanh" call? Is there another adult female close by? Is a mockingbird or starling capable of making the call? Or have I misinterpreted the video?
